ZumbAtomic at Cottonwood Heights Rec Center

ZA at CHRC was a blast yesterday! So many dancers! It has exploded into a great opportunity for parents to spend time with their kids while being active and dancing around! I enjoy watching parents and kids moving together and sharing the fun -- and I believe the kids love to watch their parents dance and be crazy. It's a great workout for everyone, made especially more fun because it's a shared experience. Thanks for coming -- we've got some awesome new songs for next week. . . . Look out, Elvis, here we come!

For more information see the CHRC website.

What is a Healthy Weight?

As body weight in the United States is gradually increasing, the perception of what is "heavy" is also changing. What may have once been viewed as overweight is now seen as normal or at worst, pudgy. The body mass index (BMI) is calculated by plugging in a person's body weight and height into a formula. Because children have growing bodies, their BMI is tracked on a chart that delineates percentiles that are specific for age and gender.

If there is any question about whether your child may have a weight problem, you can calculate your child's BMI on the CDC web site and see where the child falls on the appropriate BMI chart.

If you find that your child falls in an unhealthy percentile, you can start to take steps to correct this through exercise and proper nutrition. Small changes can make a big difference.

Let's Move

First Lady Michelle Obama is encouraging kids to get up and move! The website Let's Move has lots of information on how to get kids to be healthy, happy and active.

A great way to get moving is to come to ZumbAtomic classes at the Cottonwood Heights Rec Center. Parents are welcome to join their kids as we move, shake and play games to great music! Classes are Thursdays at 5pm and last for 45 minutes. For more information, visit the CRHC website.

Take a Moment to Think about How You Speak about Exercise

Do you make exercising sound like a bore or a chore when you talk about having to go to the gym?

Do you expect your kids to be phsyically active while you say that you don't have the time or energy to exercise?

Do you talk about the benefits of being physically active while you sit on the couch?

Think about how your kids see your relationship with physical activity and focus on doing your best to walk the walk, as well as talking positive talk!
